Video Games as Representations and Reinterpretations of History
Today video games push the boundaries of entertainment, thus becoming a form of cultural expression and addressing important and universal themes. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the history of human kind plays an increasingly central role in the game contents and is embedded within its mechanics. These games experiment with history at different levels: starting with the introduction of authentic elements taken from our past, they also feature contemporary upheavals and reinterpretations of a history distant from ours, even if only apparently. Or, as in the case of Assassin’s Creed: Origins, there are cases in which the documented context gets transformed into an exploration mode that exists independently from the original game. This talk analyses some examples of how history can be integrated in games thanks to a virtuous process that inevitably adds a strong cultural value to them.

Videogiochi come rappresentazioni e reinterpretazioni della storia
Oggi i videogiochi spostano i confini dell’intrattenimento diventando anche espressione culturale e affrontando tematiche importanti e universali. Non stupisce quindi che la storia dell’umanità abbia un ruolo sempre più centrale nei contenuti e sia integrata con le meccaniche di gioco. Le sperimentazioni partono dall’introduzione di elementi autentici del nostro passato fino ad arrivare a stravolgimenti e reinterpretazioni contemporanee di una storia apparentemente distante. Oppure, come nel caso di Assassin’s Creed: Origins, il contesto documentato diventa una modalità di esplorazione che vive in autonomia rispetto al gioco originale. Il talk analizza alcuni esempi di come la storia possa integrarsi con un processo virtuoso che aggiunge un forte valore culturale ai giochi.
